Truist and UNC Charlotte mark fifth year of Truist Rapid Innovation Program Immersive Experience, advancing a model for workforce-ready talent
Truist, in partnership with UNC Charlotte, successfully hosted its fifth annual Truist Rapid Innovation Program UNC Charlotte Immersive Experience, fostering collaboration between academic institutions and corporations to prepare the next generation of talent.
The program has evolved into a high-impact, hands-on experience designed to move beyond traditional recruiting and classroom learning. The immersive event brings students into a real-world environment where they are challenged to solve current business problems, work alongside industry professionals, and engage with the tools and technologies used across the financial services landscape.
“This experience is about more than exposure — it’s about transformation,” said Brad Yeckley, executive director for the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. “Students aren’t just observing; they’re actively contributing as problem solvers tackling real challenges.”
Throughout the day, participants engaged in team-based simulations focused on process optimization, innovation, and technology-driven solutions. Students collaborated with Truist leaders and community partners, applying critical thinking and creativity to develop practical, testable outcomes.
A consistent theme reinforced throughout the event was the importance of mindset over technical expertise. While technical skills can be developed, Truist emphasized the value of leadership, communication, adaptability, and initiative as key differentiators in today’s workforce.
Participants were also encouraged to adopt a proactive “hunter” mindset — seeking out opportunities, building meaningful connections, and taking ownership of their career development. Networking played a central role in the experience, with students engaging directly with executives, hiring leaders, and professionals from across the Charlotte business community.
“Success in environments like this isn’t defined solely by how well students perform in simulations—it’s equally measured by their ability to build meaningful connections,” Jason Cagle, head of Specialized Industry and Institutional Capital for Truist Bank. “Employers are looking for individuals who can engage, communicate, and establish relationships with intention. The students who lean into networking, ask thoughtful questions, and create authentic connections demonstrate the same competencies — initiative, confidence, and curiosity — that drive success on the job.
The partnership between Truist and UNC Charlotte continues to serve as a model for workforce development. By integrating academic learning with real-world application, the program creates a pipeline of talent that is better prepared to meet the evolving demands of the modern workplace.
As technology, especially AI, reshapes industries, the experience brought focus to the importance of aligning technical capabilities with business value. Students were challenged to think beyond tools and focus on solving meaningful problems — an essential skill in today’s rapidly changing environment.
“This is what the future of education and workforce development should look like,” said Bojan Cukic, dean of the College of Computing and Informatics. “It’s collaborative, it’s practical, and it’s designed to prepare students not just for their first job, but for long-term success.”
With five years of momentum, the Truist Immersive Experience stands as a repeatable and scalable model, demonstrating the impact of sustained, intentional collaboration between higher education and industry.
