Risk Management & Insurance Program Update for Alumni: May 2017
Dear Alumni:
We had a busy and exciting 2016-2017 academic year, and I want to provide an update on the Risk Management & Insurance program. We presently have 82 students engaged in the RMI curriculum and approximately 40 students graduate each academic year. The Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter has 145 members, which is the largest Chapter of the three North Carolina RMI Universities (ASU, ECU and UNCC). The Belk College GIS Chapter is very active in recruiting new students along with providing experiential learning opportunities and participating in community service events. In the Spring of 2016, the UNC Charlotte Insurance Jeopardy Team retired the North Carolina Insurance Jeopardy trophy after winning three of the past five years. Beginning in the Fall of 2017, Insurance Jeopardy will involve national competition at the GIS National Conference.
Since many of our students have an interest in insurance sales in standard or excess and surplus lines, we now offer each semester an elective course in insurance sales . We also created an Executive in Residence position which is currently filled by Vonni Davis, former AIG Managing Director for the Carolinas Region. Vonni assists with seminars, student mentoring and career development UNC Charlotte is currently engaged in an Exponential Capital Campaign and the RMI program has been selected by the Belk College as a program of excellence and a priority for receiving funding from Capital Campaign gifts. We hope to achieve strong Capital Campaign participation from our alumni and hope that each of you will consider a gift during 2017. Please click here to contribute to the Capital Campaign with gift options supporting a scholarship fund and an endowment fund for student professional development. Key elements of the RMI program continue to be Experiential Learning through shadows, internships, conferences and international travel along with Career Development through career fairs, licensing, professional development and student mentoring. We are grateful to our insurance industry partners and alumni for enabling us to meet our ultimate goal of inspiring and developing the next generation of insurance industry professionals. Please continue to stay connected to the Belk College Alumni Association and the RMI Program.
Sincerely, Tom
