Full-time MBA student, Channing Merritt is pursuing her Belk College MBA to gain the tools necessary to effectively manage people within an organization. Merritt says, "I believe that the knowledge I gain from this program will put me in a great position to be successful in my future career."
What degree are you pursuing and why?

I am pursuing a Master of Business Administration. After two years of working in the fashion retail industry as an allocations analyst, I wanted to gain a further understanding of what it truly takes be a successful leader within any industry. More specifically, I wanted to gain the tools necessary to effectively manage people within an organization.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

I chose the Belk College of Business because of its connections to the growing business community within Charlotte, NC. As someone who was born and raised in Charlotte, I have seen the city grow tremendously over the years. I felt that attending the Belk College of Business, located in the heart of the city, would allow for great access to the area’s business community.

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I participate in local run clubs and various running races.

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

The best part of my academic experience has been the many opportunities to participate in class discussions with individuals of diverse career backgrounds. Gaining various perspectives concerning topics such as business ethics or management styles has pushed me to think critically about the type of manager I aspire to be.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

I would describe the Belk College of Business as a diverse learning community that is really focused on preparing students for whatever path they wish to take. The college offers so many career service resources and professional development events that help students create a clear vision for their future. I am a first year MBA student that entered the program uncertain about where I would like to take my career. Utilizing the many resources available, as well as interacting with my fellow classmates, has really helped me begin to refine my career goals.

How valuable do you feel this degree will be to your career?

I believe this degree is valuable because it will show my future employers that I care about bettering myself in order to better the organization and my community as a whole. I also believe that the knowledge I gain from this program will put me in a great position to be successful in my future career.
