Finance
Lindsay Plampin majored in finance and participating in the Women in Business Initiative of the Belk College of Business as a student ambassador.
What major did you pursue and why?

I majored in finance. I began college with the idea that I wanted to major in accounting. After being a part of numerous office visits and learning more about various business careers I realized that finance was a better fit for me. I am so happy with my decision to major in finance and cannot wait to see what opportunities are ahead!

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business/UNC Charlotte?

I attended UNC Wilmington my freshman year. After taking introductory business classes my freshman year, I was confident that a business degree was the perfect path for me. Once I knew I would be pursuing a business degree, I knew UNC Charlotte would be a better fit for me. The Belk College of Business has an honorable reputation and the close proximity to Uptown makes it very easy to obtain internships and be close to so many opportunities even after graduation.

What activities are you involved in when not working or studying?

I am very proud to be involved as an ambassador for the Women in Business Initiative for the Belk College. This is an initiative that I am very excited about and enjoy being a part of. I am also a sister of Alpha Delta Pi and a member of the Financial Management Association.

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

The best part of my academic experience has been all the wonderful friends I have made along the way. I have made so many great connections through the organizations I am involved in. These friends have been a support system through all of the pressure and stress that can occur at times. I am very thankful to have such a great support.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone who is thinking about applying?

The Belk College of Business is a program that is truly unique because it is so connected with the community. Almost every business course I have taken has had an outside speaker from an internship, a club, or even a potential employer come into the classroom to inform the students about new opportunities. While I was in my marketing class, we had a speaker come in to talk about the possible internships for the following summer and the careers that are a part of the company where he worked. The speaker also discussed how an internship could really help to form your college experience and also gave advice on how to better your resume and interviewing tips. I have carried these tips with me through my interviewing process to find an internship. These types of opportunities make the Belk College stand out because the professors care about not only your time in the class, but also that you are making the most of your time outside class.

Have you utilized any professional development from the Robert A. Niblock Student Center for Professional Development?

I have attended the information sessions for interview skills, which help to prepare for a job as soon as you graduate. To me professional development means letting your experiences better yourself. You have to take all the advice you have been given, the success stories you have heard, and the work experiences you have had and put them all together to better yourself. Making the most of the opportunities you are given will lead to professional development.

If you have received a scholarship or financial aid, how has that helped you? What scholarship did you receive?

I was a recipient of the Albert G. Myers scholarship. This scholarship has helped me beyond belief. It has taken a huge burden off while trying to pay for college. I also received some financial aid as well, which has been a huge help as well.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I hope to begin a finance career at a large bank, such as Bank of America or Wells Fargo. I would love to stay in the Charlotte area and work in Uptown Charlotte. I also have hopes of returning to UNC Charlotte to attend graduate school.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Women in Business Initiative?

I got involved with the Women in Business Initiative after hearing from other ambassadors on how impactful it has been and how much they got out of the program. As an ambassador, I have been involved in helping students at UNC Charlotte feel more prepared to enter the workforce. We accomplish this by having monthly meetings with a group of students and review skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship, confidence and many others that will help them when they enter the workforce. We demonstrate these skills by sharing success stories of local business leaders.

What do you hope to get out of your experiences with the Women in Business Initiative?

I hope to learn more about improving skills such as confidence and optimism in a work environment. These skills and other characteristics can help me be successful when I enter the workforce. I have learned that self-confidence is a major aspect in all business professions. You have to be confident that you will be successful at your career to accomplish long-term success. Sometimes women have self-doubt, which causes them to not be willing to take a risk on applying for a promotion. Being aware of this can be a wake-up call to learn skills to work to change this and be more confident in yourself.

Why is the Women in Business Initiative important to have in the Belk College of Business?

The Women in Business Initiative is important because it provides such a positive atmosphere for women pursuing business degrees. Hearing the success stories of other women in professional careers is really inspiring and makes my goals seem attainable. Being able to hear others accomplishments and how they got to where they are in their career is very inspiring.
