Lina Zhou

Lina Zhou uses Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies to augment human intelligence and information literacy, drive business innovation, advance public health initiatives, protect sensitive data and mitigate risks for both individuals and organizations.

Zhou’s research interests span social media analytics, deception detection, knowledge management, biomedical informatics and intelligent mobile interface. The work includes protecting business and personal data by uncovering and predicting online attacks through behaviors and relationships; mobile device security and accessibility by creating innovative authentication methods; and conducting homicide risk forecasting through data analysis.

Since joining the Belk College in 2018, she has brought in over $1M in funding from the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency and American Public Health Association/ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others. She is a founding faculty member with the KAIM lab, which develops information systems to solve real-world problems, evaluate the impact of information technology on users and organizations, and better understand and model user behaviors.

Zhou has published more than 200 research articles. Her scholarly work has been published in premier outlets, including MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, Communications of the ACM, Information & Management, Decision Support Systems, and various ACM and IEEE Transactions journals. She has received many best paper awards and nominations at multiple conferences and workshops.

She was recognized as one of the world’s top 2% of most cited researchers in the information systems field by two recent studies done at Stanford University.  According to Google Scholar, her publications have received over 18,000 citations, a sign of the worldwide influence of her research.Zhou is a professor in the Department of Business Information Systems and Operations Management and the School of Data Science. Before joining Charlotte, Zhou was a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and a research scientist at the University of Arizona.
