Lina Zhou

Lina Zhou uses Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge tools with the aim of protecting personal and business data, advancing healthcare and potentially saving lives. Her research pushes forward technology’s positive aspects and reduces risk for businesses and individuals.

Zhou’s research interests span social media analytics, deception detection, knowledge management, biomedical informatics and intelligent mobile interface. The work includes protecting business and personal data by uncovering and predicting online attacks through behaviors and relationships; mobile device security and accessibility by creating innovative authentication methods; and conducting homicide risk forecasting through data analysis.

Since joining the Belk College in 2018, Zhou has published more than 200 research articles, including in MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Communications of the ACM, ACM Transaction, IEEE Transactions, Information and Management, and Decision Support Systems.

She has brought in over $1M in funding from the National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Education and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others. She is a lead researcher with the KAIM lab, which develops information systems to solve real-world problems, evaluate the impact of information technology on users and organizations, and better understand and model user behaviors.

She was recognized as one of the world’s top 2% of most cited researchers in the information systems field by two recent studies done at Stanford University.  According to Google Scholar, her publications have received over 18,000 citations, a sign of the worldwide influence of her research.

Zhou is a professor in the Department of Business Information Systems and Operations Management and affiliate faculty with the School of Data Science. Before joining Charlotte, Zhou was a professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and a research scientist at the University of Arizona.
