Master’s student receives scholarship for creativity in real estate
The Counselors of Real Estate Carolinas chapter recognized UNC Charlotte graduate student Benjamin Cuevas with a “Creative Thinker” scholarship on Feb. 24.
Cuevas, who is in the Master of Science in Real Estate program at UNC Charlotte, received a $1,000 scholarship, awarded annually to a university student for creativity in commercial real estate. Cuevas is among the 67 percent of M.S. in Real Estate students in the Belk College of Business who earn scholarships to supplement the cost of tuition. He started the master’s program in 2015 with four years of experience in the industry as a market analyst, project consultant, and broker for multiple subsidiaries of Sunbelt Housing Management. He is pursuing his master’s degree to strengthen his skills in real estate cash flow analysis, debt/equity financing strategies and sustainable development.
“I truly feel privileged to represent UNC Charlotte with the winning entry,” said Cuevas, whose winning scholarship essay detailed the innovative design of the Levine Center for the Arts in uptown Charlotte, by Bob Bertges. “The easy deals in commercial real estate have already been done. Success in this competitive environment requires creative and diverse thinking,” Cuevas added.
“The Master of Science in Real Estate program has had a positive impact on my skill set in a variety of ways. We receive amazing opportunities to learn from some of the most successful real estate professionals in the industry,” Cuevas explained. “The Childress Klein Center for Real Estate has an incredibly strong advisory board. Most of the members serving on this board participate in a mentor program. I’ve received invaluable guidance from my mentor and hope this program will continue for future students,” he said.
The Childress Klein Center for Real Estate was established in 2005 and has served as a valuable resource to industry leaders and regional authorities by providing timely and thoughtful research, community outreach and, most importantly, the highly-skilled professionals who will build the future through their leadership roles within the business and civic sectors.
The center administers the recently launched M.S. in Real Estate program, and has been ranked among the 20 most active research institutions in real estate for the past decade.
