Risk management and insurance team wins insurance Jeopardy tournament
Four UNC Charlotte students recently won the annual Risk Management and Insurance Jeopardy Competition hosted by the North Carolina Surplus Lines Association (NCSLA), while also taking home a trophy for the third win in five years.
The team consisted of seniors Jesse Fuery, Alexandria Bose, Charles Eisenhauer, and Christopher Wescott. Fuery, Bose, and Eisenhauer are all finance majors with a concentration in risk management and insurance. Wescott is a finance major with a minor in music.
In order to take home the trophy, a university must win three out of five years. Before the tournament, UNC Charlotte was tied with Appalachian State University, both with two years of wins. More than 150 professionals were in attendance to watch the intense game held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. vs. Appalachian State University and East Carolina University.
“Insurance Jeopardy provides the opportunity for our students to not only learn but to gain immediate recall of basic risk management and insurance concepts with a focus on excess and surplus lines. After weeks of studying for the competition, student competitors display their hard work and unique talents to surplus lines and industry professionals in the Jeopardy game setting. This year we estimate there were over 150 industry professionals who watched the game. It is a great deal of pressure but allows students to excel,” said Faith Neale, associate professor of risk management and insurance.
Neale also shared that the NCSLA sponsors 26 additional students to attend the conference. These students had the opportunity to attend the conference presentations and network with professionals. Of the 26 who attended, four students presented an overview of the risk management and insurance program to industry professionals.
Feury shared, “We learned so much from Mr. Marshall and Dr. Neale. They put so much of their own time in to prepare us for the competition. It was just a great opportunity for us to network with insurance industry professionals.”
