College honors faculty and staff during 2017 awards
The Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte recently presented awards to faculty and staff recognizing their accomplishments in teaching, research and service. The 2017 Faculty and Staff Awards were presented by Dean Steven Ott on April 21 to:
Weidong Tian, MAFI Program Director and Professor of Finance and Distinguished Professor in Risk Management and Insurance, received the Best Paper Award for his single-authored article “Callable Contingent Capital: Valuation and Default” published in Management Science. His research interests include asset pricing, and derivative and risk management. Tian joined the Belk College of Business in 2008 after serving as a faculty member at the University of Waterloo and a visiting scholar at the Sloan School of Management at MIT. He received his Ph.D. from McGill University.
Franz Kellermanns, Academic Director, DBA Program and Professor and Addison H. & Gertrude C. Reese Endowed Chair, received the Distinguished Scholarship Award. He was recognized for his strong and diverse body of work in the areas of international business, strategy process, entrepreneurship, and knowledge management. He has published 90 peer-reviewed journal articles, among other works, and has won several awards for his research and papers. He is also an editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. His research interests include international business, strategy process and entrepreneurship with a focus on family business research. He joined the Belk College in 2013 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.
Matthew Metzgar, Clinical Professor of Economics, received the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He has taught nearly 4,000 students across several undergraduate classes including Managerial Economics, Public Sector Economics, Principles of Macroeconomics, and Intermediate Macroeconomics. He initiated cooperation between his Managerial Economics undergraduate students and several start-up firms with the UNC Charlotte’s Ventureprise initiative to allow his students to directly interact with entrepreneurs. The partnership has been featured in Inside UNC Charlotte. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
Tao-Hsien Dolly King, Department of Finance Chair and the Rush S. Dickson Professor of Finance, received the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award. She has been teaching finance in the Belk College since 2006. Among her contributions to graduate education, she has mentored six doctoral students through graduation and partnered with them to publish eight papers. Her mentees represent at least 25 percent of the graduates from the Finance Ph.D. program. She plays a key role in the master of science in mathematical finance program. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and joined the Belk College in 2006.
Chandrasekar Subramaniam, Associate Professor of Management Information Systems, received the Outstanding Service Award. This year’s award winner has been recognized by UNC Charlotte’s Faculty Executive Committee for service excellence for his work in review and revision of faculty constitution as well as the Office of Disability services for supporting students with disabilities. He has also served as coordinator for the Applied Technology Program, DSI Director for the Belk College, leader in the India Academic Partnership Program, Chair of the Belk College Graduate Committee and DSBA Academic Program Committee, and member of the BISOM Department Review Committee. He joined the Belk College in 2003 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Jessica Barton, Accounting Manager, received a Staff Member of the Year Award. She received high praise from multiple colleagues and leaders in the college. One nominator noted, “[she] has an incredible wealth of knowledge and is extremely resourceful in finding ways to manage finances.” Another nominator mentioned, “I have endless questions, and she is always helpful and prompt with replies. If she doesn’t know the answer right off, she helps me find a contact or hunt down information…But the crazy part is she almost always knows the answer!” Many of her colleagues describe her as invaluable and personable. One noted that she “is a genuine asset to the College.”
Deidre Coleman, Program Manager of Global/Graduate Programs, received a Staff Member of the Year Award. Her nomination letter noted she is “very knowledgeable and incredibly personable. She is always committed to making everyone feel welcome and appreciated.” Her colleagues describe her as a successful, positive leader and team player. Others noted that she is a “true asset for the College and a pleasure to work with on so many projects related to our global programs” and “known in graduate programs for her resourcefulness, energy, and problem solving skills.” She joined the Belk College in 2007.
