Belk College junior awarded prestigious international scholarship
Belk College junior Lilia Shaforostov, along with three other UNC Charlotte undergraduate students, has received a prestigious Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad during the 2010-11 academic year.
Lilia and her fellow recipients – Jessica Craig, Hugh Kinsey, and Eber Pena – will receive awards between $3,000 and $5,000. Lilia, a junior pre-business major, will attend the University of Ghana for the fall. “The best education comes from experience, and I want to go further than the routine of making it to class,” said Lilia, who views study abroad as part of a “real” education. “I want to experience learning with someone who has a different perception of it, and I want to experience this journey as something that can be passed on to others – to remind everyone that there is a whole world out there.”
Brad Sekulich, director of the Office of Education Abroad, stated, “With four more Niners winning prestigious and competitive Gilman International Scholarships, UNC Charlotte continues to advance the global Niner Nation. Increasing numbers of our students see the value and depth that a study abroad experience can add to their collegiate career, and more Niners are earning awards like this to help make this life-changing experience a reality.”
