Accounting Honors Society Wins First Place in Regional Competition
Students from UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business are heading to nationals after winning first place for best practices in a regional competition.
To advance, students from the Belk College chapter of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), an accounting honors society, competed against students from 12 schools in the Best Practices competition at the 2020 Southeast Regional Meeting.
During the competition, the Belk College team shared their efforts to engage members through a data analytics workshop.
Belk College students Arjun Nag, Lilly Glaser and Daniel Strawn led the presentation on the chapter’s student-led training with Alteryx, a software that is designed to make advanced analytics accessible to any data worker.
“This is a very unique workshop that not a lot of other universities operate,” says Arjun Nag, a Belk College junior and the data analytics chair for Eta Alpha, UNC Charlotte’s BAP chapter.
According to the Beta Alpha Psi webpage on Best Practices, the activities presented should exemplify the spirit of BAP and “allow other chapters to emulate those activities.”
Nag says their presentation sparked interest from other chapters looking to implement a data analytics workshop.
He says he attended the conference in 2019 when the chapter earned third place in the competition. He added that coming in first place has been “a long time coming for us.”
The chapter now will present on their data analytics workshop against all the other regional winners at the national competition, which will be held Aug. 6-8 in Orlando, Florida.
Twelve Belk College students attended the regional conference, along with Robert Monaghan, the BAP advisor and a lecturer in the Turner School of Accountancy. The conference was held in Louisville, Kentucky, Feb. 21-22.
The Belk College of Business has more than a dozen active student organizations. The organizations help students develop their leadership skills, network and connect classroom experiences to real-world issues.
