Dr. Robert C. Charles is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland and holds a Juris Doctorate from the Charlotte School of Law. He spent much of his early career working in local and regional CPA firms across the Carolinas. His public accounting experience includes roles with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Grant Thornton LLP, WebsterRogers LLP, Greer & Walker LLP, Potter & Company LLP and other firms. His audit and attestation work includes serving on external audit teams for the South Carolina State Housing Authority, the City of Columbia, multiple school districts and other public entities. His tax compliance and consulting experience spans hotels, restaurants, real estate development and management, manufacturing and distribution and professional service organizations.

Following his time in public accounting, Charles built a successful career in corporate finance as an accounting and financial executive. He has held leadership roles including Chief Financial Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Vice President of Finance, Executive Director of Administrative Services and Controller for large healthcare, nonprofit and governmental organizations in the Carolinas, California, Maryland, New York and Washington, D.C.

He has also served in advisory and consulting capacities for organizations on both the East and West Coasts. His work includes fractional CFO and Controller engagements, senior advisory roles and consulting for charitable organizations, nonprofits and government entities with budgets ranging from $5 million to more than $5 billion. As both a CPA and attorney, his client base spans a wide range of industries and geographies.

Charles is the founder and principal shareholder of Robert Charles, CPA, P.A., where he provides consulting services on tax and accounting matters. He is published in the NC CPA Interim Report and the SC CPA Magazine and frequently speaks at CPA conferences on professional development and technical accounting and tax topics. He has taught accounting as an adjunct professor at Columbia College, Johnson C. Smith University, Midlands Technical College and other institutions of higher education.
