David C. Mauer, the Torrence E. Hemby, Sr. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Finance in the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte

David C. Mauer, the Torrence E. Hemby, Sr. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Finance in the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte, has won numerous awards for teaching and research, including the prestigious Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Award at Southern Methodist University.

Maurer’s research focuses on corporate finance in particular, including the intersection with investment and financing decisions. In one area of study, he considers how companies make decisions about capital structure, debt priority, and the timing of investments in uncertain and dynamic environments. His work also examines the effects of managerial compensation on firm value and the interactions between stockholders and bondholders. 

Before joining the faculty at Charlotte, Mauer was a member of the finance faculties of the University of Iowa, where he was professor and Henry B. Tippie Research Fellow; Texas A&M University, where he was the Ruby and Earle A. Shields, Jr. ’41 Chair in Investment Advising; Southern Methodist University; and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Mauer earned a doctoral degree from Purdue University.

Mauer’s research has appeared in “Journal of Finance,” “Review of Financial Studies,” “Journal of Financial Economics,” “Journal of Business,” “Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis,” “Journal of Banking and Finance,” “Journal of Corporate Finance,” “Financial Management” and many other finance and economics journals.

One of his most recent papers, CEO tax burden and debt contracting, was published in Review of Accounting Studies, a journal on the Financial Times top 50 list. He consistently has provided service to the discipline through editorial roles with a number of finance journals.

For the past decade, Mauer has directed the Ph.D. in Business Administration Program, a full-time research-oriented program covering all business disciplines, combined with in-depth study in both theoretical and empirical aspects of finance. In addition to core classes in the doctoral, master’s and undergraduate programs at Charlotte, Mauer has provided custom education for Lockheed Martin, Pioneer Natural Resources, Raytheon, Sealed Air and Verizon.
