Research Profile: George C. Banks

George C. Banks is an expert in the field of leadership science, as co-director of the Center for Leadership Science at Charlotte. In recognition of his expertise and leadership, the University has appointed him co-director of Charlotte AI Institute, or CLT AI Institute, to accelerate research that spans business, health care, science and the arts while preparing the next generation of AI professionals. A management professor and department chair, Banks is an affiliate faculty member of the Organizational Science doctoral program and the School of Data Science.
Since 2019, he has received over $1.7M in external grant funding. Most recently, through a grant from the U.S. Army Research Institute for Behavioral and Social Sciences, the Center for Leadership Science is conducting an interdisciplinary research project aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of teams in online settings, using AI.
Banks has over 60 research publications, including in top-tier outlets Science, Psychological Bulletin, Nature Human Behavior, Journal of Management, and Academy of Management Journal. He is senior associate editor for The Leadership Quarterly, a highly regarded journal.
He has received awards for his research, including the 2017 Sage Publications/CARMA Early Career Award from the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management and the 2016 Best Paper award from The Leadership Quarterly/Center for Creative Leadership. He was also one of four 2016 Best Paper Award nominees for the Academy of Management Journal.Additionally, his work has been featured in media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and National Public Radio (NPR). Previously Banks worked as a consultant for HRinterax, Inc. and Human Technology, Inc. He also has provided services for diverse clients, such as the Missile Defense Agency, the Forest Service, the Transportation Security Administration, the Patent and Trade Office and the Foreign Agriculture Service.
