Alumnus

Master of Business Administration
Adam Schorr earned his MBA from the Belk College of Business in 2011. His concentration in Investment Management led him to a successful career at LPL Financial, the largest independent broker-dealer in the United States. Adam is currently the VP of Finance in the Corporate Finance department, leading a Financial Planning and Analysis team. He attributes the return on investment from his MBA program to the experienced faculty and opportunities for hands-on learning related to finance.
What was the best part of your Belk College experience?

The best parts of the UNC Charlotte MBA were the flexibility of the program and the finance faculty members. The program allows you to focus in on topics that will benefit you the most, and also allows you to attend an MBA program while working full-time. The finance faculty were great, and brought a lot of expertise to the classroom. The faculty are highly qualified and connected to the industry, and the Belk College offers numerous additional opportunities for hands-on training like the Student Managed Investment Fund and the CFA Global Investment Research Challenge.

What opportunities did your new degree provide?

This opportunity allowed me to switch my career from compliance to finance. I was afforded the opportunity to take a Senior Analyst position in our Sales and Relationship Management teams to help run the business. This led to the opportunity to apply what I learned in the MBA program and to get hands-on experience in all aspects of running a business; finance, strategy, human capital, operations and general management. I grew in that position as the company grew and eventually was promoted to Vice President in 2013.  Just recently, I moved to our Corporate Finance department to take the lead over a team in our Financial Planning and Analysis group.

What did you learn in the Belk College that has best prepared you for your career?

I learned to foundational finance skills I needed in my career. I also learned the importance of connecting all the pieces of the business to ensure that all resources and investments are working together toward a common set of goals or strategies.

What advice do you have for current Belk College students?

Stay positive, and remember that your professional career is a journey. If you just focus on what you can control like continuous self-improvement, your attitude, and producing quality work, opportunity will come knocking! Also, take advantage of all the additional opportunities that the Belk College offers students.  It is not just about the education, but also about the networking, the events, and the additional extracurricular projects (like the CFA Global Investment Challenge) that will create a great experience and the biggest return on your investment.
