What led you to pursue a graduate degree at UNC Charlotte?
I love being in Charlotte: even though I was raised here, I’ve never wanted to leave the area. For me, it only made sense to attend an educational institution nearby as well. I really enjoyed getting to know the faculty in my undergraduate studies in Economics, so continuing my education at UNC Charlotte with the M.S. in Economics was a no-brainer.
What were some of the highlights from your program experience?
I enjoyed becoming familiar with several statistical analysis packages through my courses. I think it’s important to learn to be flexible with software, as the industry is ever-changing.
How has your degree helped you advance in your career?
The ways my degree is helping my career are innumerable: I joke that I’m essentially still in school, as my position directly channels the quantitative work I did at UNC Charlotte. I’m constantly referencing the notes I took in my econometrics and forecasting courses —they’re in a binder in my desk at work!
What lessons have you learned from your degree that you are able to apply on the job?
Group work was a major part my first semester in the program, and I’ve certainly been able to utilize those collaboration skills in the workplace. Sometimes it’s tempting to do things independently, but I’m now better able to see the value in getting a second opinion.
What aspect of the Belk College best prepared you for your career?
The Belk College has a strong presence in the business community of Charlotte, and that’s an invaluable connection to have.
What advice do you have for current Belk College students?
Take the time to really get to know your professors—you won’t regret it!
