Master of Science in Economics
What degree did you pursue and why?

I chose to pursue a Master of Science in Economics. I chose this degree because I wanted a more in-depth understanding of specific economic concepts, as well as a more advanced empirical toolset. I believe this degree is a great way to obtain the skills that employers want.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

I really liked the professional environment in Charlotte, and how the Belk College of Business seemed very connected with employers here. The College hosts networking events, mock interviews, career panels and other events that connect students with the resources they need to obtain a job after graduation.

I also liked that the Economics program here has several different concentrations and electives so that I could really craft my degree to suit my goals. I found that this level of flexibility is fairly rare among graduate programs.

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I enjoy hanging outside with my dogs, going on a hike or horseback riding. Charlotte is a great place for the “outdoorsy” type - there is so much to see and the weather is gorgeous. Here in Charlotte I have also enjoyed attending Panthers, Knights, and Hornets games.

Since coffee is one of my favorite things, I also love exploring new coffee shops around Charlotte...there are so many! Some good ones are Coco and the Director, Smelly Cat Coffee, and Parliament Coffee.

What has been the best part of your academic experience?

I really liked the small class sizes at UNC Charlotte. Coming from an undergraduate university with over 60,000 students enrolled, I was used to having really large classes. The program feels very personal; students and professors actually know each other by name. My cohort has become a supportive community, which made the adjustment to graduate life much easier for me.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

The Belk College of Business is a great place to pursue a master’s degree. The professors and staff are knowledgeable, and the other students are incredibly supportive. The College focuses on both academics and professional development so that all students are set up for success.

How valuable do you feel this degree will be to your career?

This degree will be invaluable for my career. The tools and knowledge I am obtaining in this program are in demand by recruiters and employers. I feel as though my employment possibilities have already improved so much because of this program, and I am now much more confident in my ability to achieve my career goals.
