“The Belk College of Business is a long-standing and competitive business school with compassionate professors and intelligent thinkers that impact the future in many different ways.” Patrick Butler, who was a double major in Economics and Spanish, describes his time with the Belk College of Business as memorable and meaningful. Patrick was a Levine Scholar, in the Business Honors Program, has studied abroad in Spain and interned in Los Angeles for Toyota Financial Services.

What major did you pursue and why?

I double majored in Economics and Spanish. I chose Economics because I was interested in gaining a deeper understanding of economic phenomena and the rigorous reasoning associated with it. The field of Economics is versatile for almost any professional career. I chose Spanish because even though half my family is Colombian, I never spoke the language growing up. The language is not only personal, but it also opens the door to another world of culture and understanding. I believe that Spanish is a language that will only continue to grow in the United States.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business/UNC Charlotte?

While studying abroad in Spain as a sophomore, I decided to change paths from pre-med to business. I had several friends that were already a part of the Business Honors Program, and my advisors were very helpful in guiding me to the Belk College of Business and the Business Honors Program. The Business Honors Program engages students on a personal level with small classroom settings, exceptional advising and awesome volunteer opportunities.

What activities are you involved in when not working or studying?

I was president of the UNC Charlotte International Club as a sophomore and junior. As president, I hosted several social events for international and American students to mingle and work together. I was able to get an internship in Los Angeles with Toyota’s financial department for the summer.

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

I truly enjoyed my semester abroad in Seville, Spain over Spring 2017. I took spanish and business classes with students from all over the world. Since exploring and learning are two of my favorite things, studying abroad allowed for new experiences, friendships and cultures.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone who is thinking about applying?

The Belk College of Business is a long-standing and competitive business school with compassionate professors and intelligent thinkers that impact the future in many different ways. I haven’t been a part of the college for my entire undergraduate career, but the time I have has been the most memorable and meaningful.

Have you utilized any professional development from the Niblock Student Center?

Yes, one of my favorite advisors works at the Niblock Student Center!

What does professional development mean to you?

Everyone can and should take part in professional development. Professional Development means better preparing yourself for the real world and its expectations.

How did being a Levine Scholar help you?

The Levine Scholars Program helped ease the financial burden of college by offering opportunities like study abroad and supporting me with a tight-knit network of diverse scholars.

What high school did you attend?

Millbrook High School in Raleigh, N.C.

What are your plans after graduation?

I’d like to take up a job with plenty of opportunities for growth, work for several years and then get an MBA. I wouldn’t mind working abroad either.

In your opinion, what are the 3 best things about UNC Charlotte?

UNC Charlotte is located in the biggest city in the state, meaning there’s a ton of things to do and many job opportunities. It also has an outstanding business college and an absolutely beautiful campus.

What is your favorite class that you have taken and why?

Industrial and Organizational Psychology because it taught me the psychology of both sides of the hiring process and in the workplace. I also had the same professor for Social Psychology, which is a class I recommend for everyone no matter what you study!

Tell us 3 random things about yourself.

  • I’ve traveled to 9 different countries.
  • I’m a big fan of Reggaeton. It’s like Latino party music.
