The Belk College of Business sends its sincere condolences to the family of John Montgomery Belk, former mayor of Charlotte andfriend and benefactorof the Belk College of Business, who died August 17.
The Belk family and Belk Stores organization have been longtime supporters of UNC Charlotte;the College of Business was named in their honor in 1980. In 2003, The Belk Foundation donated $1.5 million to the College at John Belk's request, to support international business programs.
At the Belk College's 35th anniversary celebration in October 2005, a portrait of John Belk and his brother, the late Tom Belk, was unveiled as a tribute to these two remarkable business and community leaders.The portraithas a place of honor in the Dean's Boardroom in the Friday Building, and John Belk will be remembered with great fondness and gratitude by the faculty, staff and students of the Belk College of Business.
