How To Apply

Application FAQs:

In order to apply to the Honors College, you must first complete your application to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and get accepted. You can find out how to do that here.

The Honors College houses the Business Honors Program. Incoming freshmen and new transfers (under 60 credit hours) should apply in the Niner Scholars Portal to the Honors College. If you are a business major, you will automatically be considered for the Business Honors Program. If you apply by the priority consideration deadlines below, you will also receive priority consideration for admission into the Business Honors Program and for associated scholarships. Continuing Charlotte students (under 60 credit hours) should apply to the Honors College by the priority consideration deadlines below as well.

Acceptance into the Business Honors Program is a highly competitive process. Qualifying credentials include proven academic excellence, demonstrated leadership and community service, and commitment and dedication to the higher learning process.

Applications are accepted for students to enter as freshmen, sophomores, or juniors. Sophomore and junior applications are accepted from both continuing Charlotte students as well as transfers. Students may only begin in the program in the fall semester.

Students must have a minimum 3.5 collegiate or unweighted high school grade point average and either an 1100 on the SAT or 22 on the ACT to be considered for the Business Honors Program. Preferred test scores for high school students to be competitive are at least 1200 on the SAT or 25 on the ACT. Standardized test scores are not reviewed for transfer applicants. [Due to COVID-19, these test scores will not be enforced for Fall 2022 admission].

Our incoming freshman class profile includes averages of a 3.9 unweighted GPA, 4.4 weighted GPA, 1301 SAT score, and 28 ACT score. Although, we look at applicants holistically so students with lower test scores are encouraged to apply if they believe they are a good fit for our program.

The Belk College of Business is dedicated to building a diverse community of students. We strongly encourage students from all backgrounds and cultures to apply.

As Space Available:

  • If all your application materials are not submitted by the December 15th Priority Deadline, your application will fall into the As Space Available pool.

The essay may be the most important piece to your application to the Business Honors Program. This will show us your writing skills, your ability to think critically, and your personality. Please make sure you spend time on this essay and address the prompt fully. This year's prompt is below so you may begin preparing your submission while awaiting your admission decision to the university. This is the same as one of the Levine Scholars essays and you can use your same response for the Honors Application. You will need to re-upload your essay into the Niner Scholars Portal for the Honors Application though.

Essay Prompt: You are applying to an honors and/or merit scholar program. Taking a step back, offer some original reflections on what the word honor or merit means to you. Discuss what you feel honor or merit commonly means in the world, what honor or merit could (or should) mean, and what actions could be considered honorable or meritorious.

Two Academic Letters of Recommendation are required

  • Your letters must be from someone who has taught you in the classroom. It can be an AP teacher, art teacher, PE teacher, etc. You should select the two teachers who can speak to your academic ability in the classroom the best.
  • You can re-use the same recommendations that you used for the application to the university if they meet the criteria in the bullet point above, but your recommenders will need to resubmit their letters to the Niner Scholar Portal. The process will be clear once you've started the application in the portal!
  • Letters of recommendation are due by the Priority Deadline. If you have all your materials in, but your teacher didn't upload the letter of recommendation on time, you will not be considered in the Priority pool.
  • Tips:
    • Ask your recommenders early. If you know you want to apply to Business Honors, don't wait until you start the application to ask them. Let them know that you'll send them the link to submit their application once you get your acceptance to Charlotte, but go ahead and give them a heads up ahead of time.
    • Ask your recommenders politely and give them at least a few weeks to write your letter.
    • Share your List of Activities, Honors Essay, and why you are interested in the Business Honors Program with them so they can personalize their letter for you.
    • Give them a desired submission deadline. Ideally, that deadline should be a few days before the Priority Deadline.
    • Gently remind your recommenders about the letter if you notice on NinerScholars that they haven't submitted it yet. It's your responsibility to make sure it gets turned in on time!
A list of activities should include
  • Leadership and involvement in clubs, organizations, and sports
  • Volunteering with organizations in your community
  • Jobs you've held throughout high school
  • Any other important information about what you've done throughout high school

List your activities in order of importance and describe to us what you did for these activities. Don't just list that you were your student body president, elaborate on what you did in that role.
